Follow this recipe for our delicious spiced brown sugar cutout cookies. Enjoy the sweet cookies as is, or lightly decorate with sanding sugar.

Ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground ginger
1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/8 tsp. allspice
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 large egg
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Instructions:
Hand whisk to blend flour, baking powder, salt, and spices in a medium bowl.  Combine sugar, brown sugar, and butter until well mixed.  Hand blend in the egg and vanilla.  Mix in flour.

Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4″ thickness and cut with the cookie cutter.

Bake on a cookie sheet with parchment paper in a 350-degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes.  When cookies are done slide parchment off the cookie sheet to cool. When fully cooled cookies can be stacked.

To decorate:
I chose not to decorate my cookies. Honestly, they are sweet enough to enjoy without icing or sanding sugars. But if you like to keep things a little sweeter I would keep things simple and just paint with a corn syrup/warm water 50/50 mixture (microwave for 12 sec to help corn syrup set). Then paint the areas you would like to have sanding sugar stick to and use simple fall colors like opal, orange, reds, and yellows.
